Ummmm. . . do I have to take all my clothes off?

The short answer is “No, absolutely not”.

This is one of the most asked questions about massage so I thought I’d write about it.

When I studied massage, many years ago, we were told to say, “Take off whatever you’re comfortable with”. That’s a bit too vague and doesn’t really answer the question.

Somewhere along the line, I changed to, “If you’re comfortable, get down to your underwear?or you can leave your clothes on if you prefer. You can leave your bra on or take it off – whatever you feel most comfortable with. I will go and wash my hands while you undress. Here is a sheet to cover yourself with.?Let me know when you’re ready.”

Perhaps a little more explanation would be good.

Firstly, no matter what, you’ll always be covered – I use large sarongs, towels and blankets, depending on the weather and your preference. You’ll never feel exposed or cold – I have a heater for cold weather and a fan for hot weather. When I work on an arm, I fold the fabrics back over your body, making sure you are covered. I do the same thing for the leg.

When I work on your full back, I fold the covers down at your hips. If you’re wearing underwear or pants, I’ll tuck the fabric into your waistband to protect your clothes from the oil. If you’re wearing a bra, I will ask if I can undo it to work on the area – if you would prefer to leave it done up, that’s fine. I’ll work around it. If you’re wearing a T shirt or a gym top, I’ll work through it. Sometimes, if I want to do some more active work, I’ll ask you to keep your shirt or clothes on until that part of the session is over. We can always work out a way to keep you comfortable while you’re having your treatment.

I don’t mind what you wear and I wont judge you. Your massage is about you and it’s important to me that you feel comfortable. For some people, that means leaving some clothing on. For others, it means taking it all off.

There is no right or wrong.

This is your massage.
